T-Mobile Netherlands is entering the TV market with a new online 'skinny bundle'. The company, which last year exited the Dutch fixed market with the sale of ISP Online, said consumers are tired of having to pay for oversized TV subscriptions. Its new Knippr service will offer a basic plan of live channels, and customers can add more channels as they wish.
The service works with any internet connection and does not require the customer to take a broadband or fixed-line subscription from T-Mobile, nor do they need have a mobile plan with the operator. T-Mobile said it's in talks with almost all the major broadcasters and online video services to offer customers the widest possible choice for their package. The exact content and prices will be announced in the spring when the service is expected to launch.
In early 2016 a beta version of Knippr will be tested, and consumers can register their interest to participate in the trial.
The news from T-Mobile follows the recent launch of the first OTT TV service in the Netherlands, Play van KPN. This offers the most popular TV channels in the Netherlands, as well as on-demand services and HBO. Subscription VoD services have already proven popular in the country, with already one in six Dutch households subscribing to Netflix, according to Telecompaper research.
