Telenor, Zong sign fiber-optic network-sharing agreement

Telenor Pakistan and China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak), which operates under the Zong brand name, have signed an agreement to share their fibre-optic networks, ProPakistani writes, citing Telenor’s CEO, Michael Foley. The pact will enable the duo to minimise costs whilst improving transmission capacity to meet rising demands for mobile data services. ‘With our strategy of ‘working smartly’, Telenor got an agreement with Zong, which gives us both big benefits on realising synergies while at the same time making hundreds of kilometers of deployed fibre available to each other,’ the official was quoted as saying.

In a related development, Zong has reportedly written to sector regulator the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to complain of distortion to its 1800MHz LTE spectrum, primarily caused by the use of DECT 6.0 cordless phones. Whilst the use of such phones has been banned, Zong has complained that the problem persists and has called for the regulator to either take further measures, or to change the cellco’s frequency allocation.
