MCIT Myanmar delays allocation of new mobile licence

Myanmar’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) has postponed the allocation of the nation’s fourth mobile licence amidst delays in the selection of local companies to form a consortium to hold the concession, the Irrawaddy writes, citing a senior MCIT official. The MCIT opened a tender in July for local firms to participate in the consortium and received expressions of interest from 17 companies the following month. The deputy permanent secretary of communications, Chit Wai, was quoted as saying that the MCIT is trying to pick the winners ‘as soon as possible,’ and that the process could be complete by mid-October. The winning bidders will go on to form a consortium that will then team up with a foreign operator – also to be selected by the MCIT – to establish the nation’s fourth mobile operator.
