China launches world’s first 10G internet network

China has activated what it describes as the world’s first commercial 10-Gigabit (10G) broadband network in Sunan County, Hebei Province. The project is a collaboration between China Unicom and Huawei.

The system uses 50G Passive Optical Network (PON) technology, which boosts data transfer capacity over existing fiber-optic infrastructure. Initial tests recorded peak download speeds of 9,834 Mbps, upload speeds of 1,008 Mbps, and latency as low as 3 milliseconds—significantly faster than typical 1G broadband. The network can handle large data transfers and support bandwidth-heavy applications such as 8K video streaming, virtual reality, and cloud-based services. For instance, a 20GB file can be downloaded in under 20 seconds.

Authorities say this rollout will serve as a model for future deployments in other regions. Nationwide expansion will depend on technical feasibility and user demand.

While other countries like South Korea, the UAE, and Qatar have invested in next-gen broadband, China is the first to officially offer 10G service to the public.

The high-speed network is expected to benefit sectors that rely on stable, low-latency connections, such as online education, digital healthcare, remote farming, and industrial automation.

Huawei noted that using 50G PON enabled a major performance boost without the need to replace existing infrastructure.

This development is part of China’s broader push to enhance digital infrastructure and meet rising demands from connected devices and data-driven services.
