Digicel Jamaica taps Caban to install solar tech at its cell towers

Digicel Jamaica announced that it has struck a partnership with renewable energy solutions provider Caban Energy to diversify energy sources for its cell towers with solar technology.

Under the partnership agreement, Caban is deploying its solar energy and storage solutions at Digicel’s cell towers across Jamaica.

That includes the towers Digicel leases from Phoenix Tower International, which bought 451 of Digicel’s towers in 2018. Caban is collaborating with PTI to deploy solar tech at those towers.

Digicel said that once the deployment is complete, the addition of solar energy will not only significantly lower the telco’s operational costs, but also reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over 38,674 tons of CO2e per year, or 580,109 tons of CO2e for the life of the project.

“In the wake of Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 which caused significant damage to the south coast of Jamaica, and in particular to the power supplies that we rely on to run our telecoms infrastructure, we made a commitment to the Prime Minister of Jamaica that we would invest in renewable energy,” said Digicel Jamaica CEO Stephen Murad in a statement. “We’re proud that just eight months later, we’re honouring that commitment and actively stepping up to help combat climate change.”

Meanwhile, Digicel Jamaica’s parent company Digicel Group says it's looking to deploy Caban’s energy solutions in other markets where it operates.

“Jamaica is our first market with Caban and is the shape of things to come with the expectation that more of our 25 markets will come on stream in the coming months,” said Digicel Group CEO Marcelo Cataldo.
