Millicom subsidiary Tigo El Salvador has allocated US$500mn to the modernization and expansion of its 4G network.
The five-year investment was announced in 2019.
During the second half of 2024, the company improved connectivity in 44 municipalities, increasing navigation capacity by 30% and expanding coverage in 92 districts, the company said in a sponsored column published by local news outlet El Salvador.com.
With the modernization, Tigo reached national coverage of 95%, equivalent to 5.7mn inhabitants.
"More than 99% of our clients already operate on renewed LTE networks, positioning us as the company with the most advanced mobile infrastructure in the country," said Hernán Mariño, VP of operations for Tigo El Salvador.
The expansion is also a response to the growth of tourism and the development of new urban areas. In the historic center of capital San Salvador, for example, the company invested US$1mn in underground cabling and capacity expansion.
The expansion also includes new tourism destinations such as Surf City, Chalatenango and rural areas.
The company did not provide information about investments for this year.
"We will continue investing and evolving so that more Salvadorans have access to first-class connectivity”, El Salvador CEO Carolina Vallejo said.
