SK Broadband says it is using AI technology on real-time broadcasting, allowing it to upgrade its sports channel into the UHD format.
In an industry first, the South Korean operator is upgrading its SPOTV channel from the current full HD (1920×1080) into UHD (3840×2160) quality, representing an engancement of four times the original picture quality.
While broadcasters have previously transmitted UHD during landmark events such as the Olympics or the World Cup, this is the first time UHD upscaling technology has been applied to real-time broadcasts transmitted in full HD over IPTV.
The enhancement is based on SK Telecom’s Supernova technology, which is powered by the deep learning algorithms of AI.
The integration of servers with high-performance AI graphics processing units (GPUs) improves the perceived quality by enhancing the video’s colour and clarity, providing a much better UHD experience compared to the AI capabilities built into standard smart TVs.
The telecast can be viewed by customers with the Smart 3 and AI 4 Vision devices.
