AT&T upgrades connectivity for the big game at the Superdome

AT&T's network connects people across the nation celebrating significant moments, from concerts and festivals to parades and sporting events. When it comes to experiencing live, large-scale events, fans are increasingly reliant on technology. As the fan experience evolves, our network evolves too. We’ve equipped our network to handle all those videos, texts, and selfies, all while prioritizing high speed and reliability.

AT&T is the MVP (Most Valuable Provider)

AT&T serves as the MVP at the Superdome and surrounding areas in New Orleans, as the neutral host provider. This setup is a game-changer, offering numerous advantages for the city and its visitors. We’ve equipped the stadium and surrounding areas with an upgraded distributed antenna system (DAS) ready to handle the crowd. Our infrastructure is designed to support multiple carriers, allowing other wireless service providers to use the same network. By allowing other carriers access, everyone, regardless of their wireless carrier, should be able to enjoy reliable connectivity during the Big Game and surrounding events.

Superdome Spectacular

Two years ago, our network team began making extensive network upgrades in New Orleans to help ensure a smooth experience for fans and visitors. Shortly after the Men’s Final Four in 2022, we kicked off planning for our massive technology refresh of the Superdome. The new DAS enhances wireless connectivity by distributing signals throughout the venue, ensuring strong and reliable coverage. With 91 zones of 5G+ C-Band/3.45 and 4G LTE PCS/AWS/WCS spectrum, 5G+ mmWave including 34 high-power radios blanketing the bowl seating area, and 255 low-power in the back of house and concourse areas, you’ll be able to share every touchdown and selfie with ease.2 And through AT&T Turbo, consumers can boost their connectivity for best performance experience on-the-go, and much more.

Beyond the Game

The new DAS includes not only the inside but an expanded outdoor antenna system around the stadium, covering tailgating zones, party decks, and parking garages. We also upgraded the Smoothie King arena with a new indoor DAS system to keep the party going.

Pop Star Pressure

Remember the pop tour of the century? It was the ultimate test for our network at the stadium, and it performed spectacularly. The three concerts in October together generated a jaw-dropping 69 terabytes of data — the most data AT&T’s network has ever moved at the Superdome. That’s the equivalent of about 17 million hours of streaming music or nearly 14 million social media posts with photos. If we can handle that, you bet we’re ready for the Big Game.

Connectivity Blitz

Knowing the good times continue to roll even outside the stadium, we’ve got you covered throughout the city of New Orleans.

In Louisiana, we invested nearly $2.1 billion in our network infrastructure from 2019-2023, including more than $575 million in Greater New Orleans-Metairie Area.

Technology refresh of in-building systems at several prominent hotels hosting fans, players, and coaches.

5G+ C-Band/3.45 GHz spectrum added to sites around the downtown area, including exhibit halls at the New Orleans Convention Center.

An already robust small cell network downtown is now even better with the addition of four new nodes and 5G+ C-Band overlay on 69 small cells.

11 COWs (Cells on Wheels) are on the city streets to boost coverage during Mardi Gras festivities and tailgate activities.

Touchdown for First Responders

For any big event, FirstNet, Built with AT&T works side by side with first responders and public safety agencies to build the best game plan. With always-on priority and preemption across 5G and LTE, as well as public safety’s Band 14 spectrum in and around the stadium, first responders at the Big Game have reliable connectivity they trust to carry out their missions.

Our FirstNet Response Operations Group™ (ROG) is also on standby at Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs) and in the stadium with dedicated mobile assets, including SatCOLTs (Satellite Cell on Light Trucks) and CRDs (Compact Rapid Deployables) to keep public safety connected.

Game on!

Grab your devices and get ready—this game is set to be an unforgettable event. With our enhanced network infrastructure, you can share every moment, stay connected, and enjoy the experience.
