Globe Telecom Inc. has successfully piloted its 50 Gigabit Passive Optical Network (50GPON) technology, achieving speeds five times faster than current 10GPON systems in a move to advance broadband connectivity in the Philippines.
The trial, conducted at Globe’s Valero Telepark in Makati City, demonstrated the potential of 50GPON to deliver data transmission at up to 50 gigabits per second, enabling applications such as 8K streaming, cloud gaming, augmented and virtual reality, and high-definition video conferencing.
James Lim, Globe vice president for broadband service planning and engineering, said the new technology is part of the company’s strategy to meet evolving customer needs.
“With this milestone, we’re taking a giant step towards ensuring our network is ready to support the evolving needs of our customers, both now and in the years to come,” he said.
The technology promises reduced latency and improved efficiency, catering to both residential and enterprise users. Globe said it is exploring areas and identifying early adopters for potential deployment.
Globe added that 50GPON could support innovations in telemedicine, e-learning, advanced manufacturing, and smart city development, contributing to the digital transformation of the Philippines.
