Sky Stream adds Freeview channels

Sky Stream, the puck-like device that replaces the satellite dish with internet-delivered content, has given UK viewers the ability to add DTT channels.

A software update issued in the last few days adds a TV antenna icon to the Apps and Inputs rail of the Sky Stream homepage. If users connect an aerial via the UHF input on the back of the 11cm device its possible to conduct a scan of locally available channels.

The receiver will pick up both SD and HD broadcasts, though not data, so there is no Red Button content available on BBC channels.

At first glace one could question the wisdom of adding a terrestrial tuner to a device that is connected to a TV display that in all probability contains its own tuner. However, it does make it easier to move between IP-delivered and satellite broadcasts in the event of a loss of broadband.

Other than micro local TV services there a no gains in channels received and given the Sky Stream box has no hard drive of its own, there’s no possibility of pausing or recording Freeview content.
