Caltrans launches Willows Broadband Project to expand internet access

Construction on the Willows Broadband Project is set to begin on Highway 162 in and near Willows, Glenn County, according to Caltrans.

Caltrans says the project aims to enhance internet connectivity for communities with limited or no access to high-speed internet. As part of the initiative, workers will install underground conduits, fiber optic cables, and support infrastructure, including vaults and markers along the highway. This foundational work is designed to improve access to affordable, high-speed internet for residents, businesses, and community institutions, according to Caltrans.

The Willows Broadband Project is part of California’s Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative, led by the California Department of Technology. Established by Senate Bill 156 in July 2021, the initiative focuses on building a high-capacity, open-access middle-mile network. These fiber optic lines serve as a data backbone, enabling local internet service providers to offer better connectivity to unserved and underserved areas.

The project has a budget of $3.93 million, funded by the California Department of Technology, and construction is expected to be completed by May.

Residents and commuters in the area are advised to plan for potential delays during construction and stay informed about updates.
