SLT is thrilled to announce that SEA-ME-WE 6 (Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6) submarine cable has officially landed in Matara, Sri Lanka, on December 29, 2024! This remarkable milestone was achieved in collaboration with Subcom LLC, USA.
Spanning 21,700 km from Singapore to France, SEA-ME-WE 6 connects 14 countries, including Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and more. Designed with cutting-edge submarine fiber optic technology, this system offers a massive capacity of 130 Tbps, delivering high-speed, low-latency connectivity. As a consortium partner, Sri Lanka Telecom is proud to strengthen global connectivity, enabling seamless communication across Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. This advancement supports Sri Lanka’s digital economy and addresses growing customer demands for reliable connectivity.
As the designated landing partner, Sri Lanka Telecom worked closely with government authorities to secure a safe and environmentally conscious route for the cable’s arrival in Matara. The marine route was carefully chosen to protect sensitive aquatic ecosystems, supported by thorough environmental assessments and adherence to marine protection policies. Additionally, we leveraged existing infrastructure to ensure minimal environmental impact when connecting the cable to the landing station in Matara.
Sri Lanka Telecom has a long history of connecting Sri Lanka to the world through its involvement in global submarine cable systems, including SEA-ME-WE 4, and 5, as well as the Bharat-Lanka and Dhiraagu cables. Our continued investment in these systems underscores our commitment to providing uninterrupted, high-quality global connectivity for our customers.
