Nepal Telecom (NTC) has launched its 4G service in the Mugum Karmarong Rural Municipality – 04 of Mugu district, marking a significant milestone for the remote area. The service was officially inaugurated on Poush 25, 2081, after a new base station was brought into operation.
This is the first time Karmarong has had access to 4G service, which provides high-speed mobile data and enables users to enjoy NT’s carrier aggregated 4G service. Additionally, the VoLTE service allows high-definition voice calls without interrupting data usage, which benefits local businesses by enabling electronic transactions.
Karmarong, located at an altitude of 3,000 meters, is one of the most remote regions in Mugu district and connects to the border with China. Prior to this, only GSM mobile service was available in the area through VSAT technology, which was introduced by Nepal Telecom in 2075. With the introduction of 4G, Karmarong now receives world-class telecommunication services.
The 4G coverage spans across all wards of the Karmarong Rural Municipality, including Dolfu, Pulu, Kimri, Kartike, Dara, Riusa, and more. It also extends to trekking routes in the region, bringing reliable mobile data to previously underserved areas. The geographic challenges of Nepal have historically hindered the spread of such services, but efforts from companies like NTC are crucial in advancing digital inclusion.
As a state-backed telecom company, NTC has focused on expanding and upgrading its services. The company provides GSM cellular service and FTTH fiber internet, and it has extended 4G coverage to 98% of local levels while achieving nationwide FTTH fiber internet coverage. NTC is also planning to shift to 5G and will resume 5G trials in FY 2081/82, making the expansion of 4G a key component of its future plans.
