Bahrain and Algeria collaborate on proposed Arab framework agreement for AI and digital technology regulations

Bahrain and Algeria are working together to establish an Arab framework agreement aimed at creating unified regulations for artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies. These discussions took place during the 2024 United Nations Internet Governance Forum in Riyadh.

A Bahraini parliamentary delegation, led by Jamal Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, and MP Muneer Seroor, engaged in talks with representatives from the Algerian Parliament. The forum, held from December 16 to 18, was organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the Saudi Shura Council. It brought together lawmakers from around the world to discuss tech regulation and digital policy-making.

The conversations focused on an Algerian proposal to create an Arab Framework Agreement inspired by international conventions developed by the United Nations. If adopted, the agreement would require participating countries to implement common standards for the development and use of AI and related technologies. This initiative aims to promote collaboration and ensure ethical practices across the Arab region as the tech landscape rapidly evolves.
