NCC introduces new tariff structure

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a new tariff structure for telecommunications services that will come into effect on 13 December.

The new tariff plan is expected to provide relief to telecom consumers by simplifying offers and eliminating confusion over data usage and airtime. The NCC has imposed a limit on the number of tariff plans that operators can offer, restricting them to a maximum of seven.

“We have engaged stakeholders extensively to gather their views and ensure robust inputs. This measure aims to create a more transparent pricing environment, enabling consumers to better understand the options available to them and avoid misleading promotions,” said Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC.

The move follows numerous complaints from telecom operators which are pushing for an increase in telecommunications tariffs due, among other things, to the increase in their operating costs due to the difficult macroeconomic conditions, marked by inflation and the persistent depreciation of the naira against the dollar and other currencies.
