Japanese IT giants to lay 5G network expansion in Cambodia

In a significant move towards advancing telecommunications in Cambodia, Japanese giants NTT Docomo and Nippon Electric Company (NEE) have initiated a groundbreaking partnership to establish a wireless network in the Southeast Asian nation, laying the groundwork for future 5G implementation, according to a story published in Nikkei Asia on Saturday.

The joint venture, known as Orex Sai (originally announced in February 2024), plans to launch a 4G network at a prominent commercial complex in Cambodia, with the rollout anticipated by the end of this fiscal year in March 2025, said Nikkei Asia.

As Cambodia’s digital economy continues to grow, the development of a robust telecommunications infrastructure has become increasingly essential.
The partnership signals not only a boost to local infrastructure but also a step toward propelling Cambodia’s position in the Southeast Asian tech landscape.

In recent years, Cambodia has experienced rapid growth in mobile connectivity with 4G networks now covering major urban areas and the government actively pursuing policies that support digital transformation.

However, rural areas still struggle with inconsistent network access and a lack of high-speed connectivity limits the country’s potential to engage fully in the digital economy.

The new 4G network, supported by Orex Sai, will address this issue, improving access to reliable high-speed internet for consumers and businesses alike.

This initial infrastructure will not only enable more consistent 4G services in key urban centers but will also lay the foundation for the eventual adoption of 5G.

The shift to 5G is crucial for Cambodia to remain competitive with its neighbours, particularly as countries in Southeast Asia race to establish themselves as leaders in the digital economy.
