Samsung Electronics announced that it will supply its 4G/5G-compatible virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) solution to Japanese telecom provider KDDI. KDDI will use Samsung’s technology to expand its 5G coverage while also maintaining support for its 4G network.
Open RAN is a standard technology that separates hardware and software in wireless communication equipment, allowing interoperability between devices from different manufacturers., KDDI plans to expand its Open RAN infrastructure using Samsung’s vRAN solution from 2025 onwards.
Samsung Electronics will supply KDDI with a comprehensive network solution that will include 4G and 5G vRAN 3.0 solutions, Massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) devices, and Open RAN compatible base stations supporting low and mid-band frequencies. This will allow KDDI to fully separate its network’s hardware and software components, enabling a more flexible and efficient network structure that can be independently developed, upgraded, and managed.
