State-controlled Telekom Srbija expects that its 5G network will cover the whole Serbian territory by 2027 when the country will host the international exhibition Belgrade Expo 2027, the company's director general, Vladimir Lucic, said recently.
"We have already implemented a part of the 5G base stations. Therefore, shortly after obtaining the permit from [the telecommunications agency] RATEL we will switch on the 5G network. We are ready to cover all towns with the 5G technology within a year," Lucic told public broadcaster RTS in an interview uploaded on the RTS' website.
Lucic noted that the 5G coverage process will be speeded up by Telekom Srbija's partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Swedish Export Credit Corporation and the US EXIM Bank, which will participate in the project financing.
Telekom Srbija's strategic partner in the project is Vodafone, the world's largest mobile operator and biggest 5G manager in the world, Lucic noted. In March, he said that Telekom Srbija's 5G base stations were under construction by Ericsson and Nokia.
In August, the Serbian government said RATEL will hold an auction for allocating 5G spectrum licences in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the expansion of the 5G network in the country expected to start in 2026.
