Oman’s information, communications, and technology (ICT) sector has continued to advance in recent years, boasting an increase in internet access of 98% in its households, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
Recognizing the pivotal role of the ICT landscape in economic diversification, the country’s Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) remains committed to formulating and implementing e-government strategies in Oman, fostering a digitally driven society, and enhancing the public sector’s efficiency through modern technology.
Additionally, the survey found that 83% of individuals are utilizing the internet for electronic financial transactions, indicating the progress the country has made in implementing nationwide digital transformation.
Oman’s rapid acceleration of its ICT landscape is guided by its Vision 2040, which aims to drive economic growth and societal empowerment while addressing the increasing technological demands of the country.
The NCSI’s findings in the survey will be instrumental in shaping policies to accelerate Oman’s ICT sector and boost its global rankings in the industry.
This comes after the MTCIT announced its agenda last month to advance Oman’s digital transformation in 2024, which will focus on enhancing governmental digital services and infrastructure and completing the first phase of the Government Electronic Integration Acceleration Project.
Other initiatives include introducing the Readiness and Digital Services Maturity Measurement System, launching the National Open Data Platform, and implementing the Digital Empowerment Program for National Talents.
These initiatives are poised to help build smart societies in the country and provide job opportunities for the younger generation to enhance overall societal development.
The Sultanate maintains the country’s accountability in driving developments in ICT by aligning strategic plans and programs with the vision’s objectives and assessing the progress they have made through the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit annual meetings.
