Telefónica Perú has reported that it continues to fulfill the infrastructure expansion commitments made with the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) within the framework of the Coverage Fee program. As part of this mechanism, in the last four years, 150 4G internet base stations have been installed nationwide, benefiting 963 communities, impacting the lives of more than 94 thousand people living in rural areas of Peru.
This milestone was announced in the Miguel Grau community, located in the province of Padre Abad in Ucayali, during the inauguration of the 4G internet antenna, which allowed the arrival of the connection for the benefit of this community, where some 80 families dedicated to the cultivation of oil palm and cocoa live.
The activity was attended by Raúl Pérez Reyes, head of the MTC; Carla Sosa, Vice Minister of Communications; Elena Maestre, Executive President of Telefónica del Perú; Teresa Gomes, CEO of Internet para Todos; Luis Prendes, General Director of Fundación Telefónica Movistar; local authorities and residents of the community of Miguel Grau. In addition, the new connectivity was successfully tested through a virtual connection with Raúl Pérez Reyes, head of the MTC.
Deputy Minister of Communications, Carla Sosa Vela
We are connecting more Peruvians in rural areas. In Miguel Grau, a cocoa and palm oil producing town, this connectivity is key to boosting its economic development and improving marketing opportunities. At the MTC we reaffirm our commitment to reducing the digital divide. The innovative coverage fee mechanism is concrete proof that our priority, more than revenue collection, is to ensure that all Peruvians, regardless of their location, have access to the benefits of connectivity.
Elena Maestre, CEO, Telefónica del Perú
Today we celebrate how the joint efforts of the public and private sectors can make possible what all Peruvians long for: to have a connected Peru. For this reason, in 2024 we have renewed and increased our investment commitments through fees with the MTC to continue contributing to reducing the digital divide. We are witnesses to how connectivity opens the way to better development opportunities for communities. This is done by boosting economies, promoting financial inclusion, and providing access to better education and health. For these reasons, we are sure that this great effort will bring development to the residents of Miguel Grau.
