Meta sets up new platform for creative AI content

Meta (NASDAQ: META) has announced a new artificial intelligence (AI) offering designed to allow users of its platforms to build AI-based characters as extensions of themselves, a move that has sent ripples through the ecosystem.

Dubbed AI Studio, Meta says the offering will be available to users of Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, allowing them to interact with their contacts in novel ways. According to a Meta blog post, users will be able to create two types of AI characters: the first being an extension of users and the second based on user interests.

The immediate use case for the offering appears to be for creators with a significant following, with Meta noting it can be used to connect with audiences on a personal level while saving time. The capability to mimic the voice and tone of creators while being easy to create is expected to garner positive remarks from users.

Creators can leverage the AI chatbots to respond to simple direct messages or story replies from fans without the requirement for a subscription. To improve the accuracy of responses, AI Studio relies on Meta’s latest large language model (LLM) Llama 3.1, famed for its parameter size and logical capabilities.

There is no requirement for technical expertise, and users can choose the exact content on which their AI will be trained, improving customization levels for the offering. For now, creators can train their AI with their posts, reels, comments, stories and highlights, broadcast channels and even archived posts.

Details from the blog post reveal that users can limit the audiences interacting with their AI-based characters, giving adopters high levels of transparency and control.

Outside of characters that are extensions of users, AI Studio allows users to create AI chatbots based on their interests. Meta will offer intending users a pool of prompts to support the creation process, introducing a new way for customers to interact with generative AI based on their passions.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the AI chatbot feature is the ability for users to either keep their conversations private or share them with the public through stories or profiles. Meta says AI Studio will only be available to users in the United States, but exact details for a global commercial rollout remain unclear.
