Umniah Jordan to deploy Ericsson’s AI solutions to reduce energy consumption

Ericsson announced that Jordanian telco Umniah will deploy its artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions to reduce energy consumption across its network operations, following a successful proof-of-concept (PoC).

The PoC tested Ericsson’s Intelligent RAN Power Saving solution, part of the Service Continuity AI app suite. This solution uses a machine learning prediction model to continuously analyze real-time network data and activity in neighboring cells, determining whether to deactivate, activate, or maintain network components. This approach enables precise energy management, operational efficiency, and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions and operating costs.

The PoC demonstrated a roughly 20% reduction in 5G daily power usage, prompting Umniah Jordan CTO Alaa Ibrahim to agree to proceed with full-scale implementation. “The positive outcomes of the initial proof-of-concept were clear, and we are eager to see the benefits of this AI-enhanced power-saving technology on a larger scale,” he stated.

This announcement follows a similar AI-related deal in March, where Umniah agreed to deploy Ericsson’s Cognitive Software AI solutions to optimize its network in key locations, including Amman. Additionally, Ericsson signed an MoU with Umniah in May to expand its 3G and 4G network in major cities across Jordan.
