CelcomDigi opens 5G-AI showcase lab with 40 tech partners

Malaysian telco CelcomDigi has launched its “AI Experience Centre (AiX)”, which aims to foster cross-industry collaboration for emerging technologies including 5G, AI, robotics and the metaverse.

Located at the CelcomDigi Hub in Subang Jaya’s Hi-Tech Park, AiX will showcase AI-powered solutions developed by an ecosystem of 40 global tech companies, local partners and solution providers. The bigger names include Huawei, ZTE, Amazon Web Services, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), Ericsson, Microsoft, SK Telecom, Softbank, Sumitomo, and Yinson.

AiX provides a collaborative space that serves as a cutting-edge live lab environment for startups, large-scale enterprises, academia and government to co-create, test, and validate new solutions that pair 5G and AI with other emerging technologies extended reality, robotics, analytics and metaverse apps.

AiX features two main spaces for visitors – one featuring immersive, interactive simulations of ‘digital society’ applications, and the other showcasing real-world industrial use cases. The simulations demonstrate deployment of 5G and AI-powered technologies and robotics across eight verticals: manufacturing, logistics, energy, fleet, port, healthcare, education and agritech.

CelcomnDigi says that of the 45 solutions featured within the eight verticals, 13 are live use cases being piloted with enterprises in Malaysia.

The centre also features autonomous robots performing tasks such as perimeter surveillance, goods delivery, entertainment, and personal assistance, and an “AI digital human and resident co-host” called AI-RA that serves as a tour guide for the displays.

CelcomDigi CEO Idham Nawawi said the company and its partners have invested RM55 million (US$11.7 million) into the AiX to help Malaysia keep pace with the development of emerging technologies like AI and realise its ambition of becoming a digital nation.

“In the fast-paced era of digital everything, speed and ferocity of innovation is essential. We have therefore designed AiX on a model of strong partnerships and constant evolution, enabling us to co-create use cases with great potential at an accelerated speed for Malaysia,” he said in a statement. “We will continue to invest in the infrastructure, partnerships, and competencies needed to support Malaysia through the rapid tech changes around us.”
