EE launches Scam Guard to protect mobile users from fraud

EE has launched a new subscription service aimed at protecting customers from scam calls.

Called Scam Guard, the service is available to EE pay-monthly mobile customers, starting at £1 per month.

The move comes as government research revealed 40% of crimes in the UK are fraud-related, and nearly all mobile phone users (96%) report experiencing regular nuisance calls.

As a result, the telecoms giant said it hopes the new service would eliminate the stress of cybersecurity and understanding the technology around it.

It also aims to educate users on the subject, the parent company of BT Group revealed.

EE added that the service would employ AI to detect potential spam calls and notify users, send alerts if a user’s personal information appears on the dark web and offer tips on securing compromised accounts.

It will also provide antivirus and malware protection for two devices and includes tools for creating stronger passwords and enhancing social media security through EE’s Cyber Security Duo, free for the first three months.

BT Policy Director, Helen Burrows, said: “We have always prioritised the protection of our customers and our investment in Scam Guard is something we are all incredibly proud of. We truly believe it will make a significant contribution to the prevention of scams and fraudsters.”

“EE was a founding member of Stop Scams UK, and part of a cross-industry alliance to share intelligence on scams. We also employ security experts and network-level security to safeguard our network and customers from cyber-attacks. This is something we take seriously, and while we already block an impressive number of scams, there is always more that we can do. Scam Guard covers all bases so customers can feel safer on our network.”
