O2 Telefónica has partnered with Autobahn GmbH to expand additional mobile phone sites along Germany's motorways with 5G technology.
In an announcement, the carrier said it signed the agreement at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport.
The expansion of the 5G network will stretch along the 13,200-kilometer-long motorway network.
As part of the agreement, Autobahn GmbH will search for and provide suitable federal land along the motorways, at rest areas, and on its own land for the required new locations, noted O2 Telefónica.
The carrier said that the partnership with Autobahn will make it easier to secure the necessary approval to facilitate its network expansion along the motorways.
On top of this, O2 Telefónica added that the partnership will also help it to "re-plan and evaluate sites whose construction was considered impossible in the past or which were rejected in previous approval procedures."
"The agreement enables O2 Telefónica to accelerate the expansion of the network along the motorways," said Valentina Daiber, board member for legal and corporate affairs at O2 Telefónica.
"Together with Autobahn GmbH, we want to identify hurdles in the approval process, quickly remove them, and develop suitable properties for the construction of new mobile phone sites. This will benefit our approximately 45 million customers when they travel on federal highways. Our goal is clear: nationwide 5G along German motorways too."
O2 Telefónica launched its 5G network in Germany in 2020, and last year connected 1,500km of motorways with the service.
