The number of internet subscribers in Bangladesh surged by a massive 2.6 million in May, one of the biggest jumps in recent years, with mobile data users making up a bulk of the new customers.
During this period, the total number of internet users reached 141.28 million, of them mobile internet subscribers reached 127.84 million and broadband internet subscribers stood at 13.44 million, according to the latest data of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
The number of mobile internet subscribers jumped from 125.15 million in April to 127.84 million in May. However, the number of broadband internet users remained same during the period.
After six months of continuous decline, the number of mobile internet subscribers in the country increased by 1.17 million at the end of February.
On the other hand, the number of broadband internet subscribers increased from 12.88 million in February to 13.44 million in March.
During this period, mobile phone operators in the country added 1.36 million new subscribers, bringing the total number of subscribers to 195.09 million in March.
The largest operator Grameenphone gained 960,000 subscribers in the month while Robi Axiata added 370,000 users.
The third-largest mobile operator Banglalink obtained only 10,000 users in May. The government-owned telecom operator Teletalk gained 20,000 subscribers.
The number of subscribers for each mobile operator--Grameenphone, Robi Axiata, Banglalink Digital Communications, and Teletalk Bangladesh --stood at 84.91 million, 58.88 million, 44.73 million, and 6.57 million respectively, at the end of May, according to the data.
