Telefonica’s Venezuelan unit Movistar announced plans to upgrade around 500 4G base stations.
BN Americas reported, the base stations that will be modernised are located in Caracas and Oriente, and Movistar plans to expand its footprint in 32 new areas of the country.
Telefonica Movistar Venezuela president José Luis Rodríguez Zarco said: “The recovery of the value of our services, among other variables, allows us to have adequate cash flow to continue investing,” said José Luis Rodríguez Zarco, president of Telefónica Movistar in Venezuela.
“We are focused on expanding our coverage, modernizing our platforms, recovering affected stations and preparing for new technologies such as voice over LTE and 5G.”
The operator will also conduct 5G tests in preparation for an eventual launch, following rival Digitel who announced it will begin testing 5G for fixed wireless access broadband.
