Armenian telco Ovio launches data center outside Yerevan

Armenian telco Ovio has launched its first data center in Abovyan, Armenia.

The facility, located 16km from the capital Yerevan, has an IT capacity of 2MW across 200 racks.

Ovio said its data center has access to a 35kW substation, with the construction of a second 110kW substation underway. The facility also has a backup cooling system and access to Tier III-quality equipment.

“It is a great honor to announce the official launch of the largest data processing center in Armenia. The launch of this state-of-the-art facility is an important step in the technological development of our country and underlines our commitment to strengthen Armenia’s position in the global IT environment,” said Hayk Faramazyan, general director of Ovio.

He added: “I can say that our data processing center will act as a catalyst for economic growth, attracting foreign companies, as well as concentrating local technological potential.”

Faramazyan also said that hundreds of jobs have been created as a result of the data center build.

The data center was approved by the Government of the Republic of Armenia and was included in the “Infrastructure for Investments” program in the country.

Founded in 2007, Ovio, also known as GNC-ALFA CJSC, operates a fiber-optic network connecting Armenia to Iran, Georgia, and Europe. The company is one of Armenia’s largest telcos and cloud service providers and said its fiber optic network spans 80 percent of Armenia.

Currently, Armenian Datacom Company and Arminco operate data centers in the capital Yerevan.
