Telecom Fiji starts work on new fibre project for Vanua Levu

Telecom Fiji said that it has officially commenced Phase 2 of its Fibre Optics Northern Project to expand its underground fibre optic cables between Seaqaqa and Savusavu on the northern island of Vanua Levu.

The telco said that the expansion between the two villages will not only strengthen Fiji’s national backbone and significantly improve reliability for customers, but also ensure business continuity and support ongoing economic growth and development.

As part of Phase 2, underground fibre optic cables will extend to Savusavu, which hosts a cable landing station for the Southern Cross NEXT subsea cable that runs between Australia and California. Telecom Fiji said this will provide reliable, high-speed, low-latency data links to Seaqaqa customers.

The terrestrial fibre cable will also link the town of Labasa to Savusavu, while existing wireless connectivity will be maintained for redundancy.

“The extension of fibre optic cables between Seaqaqa and Savusavu …will greatly benefit the Northern region,” said Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima at a grounbreaking ceremony. “Enhanced connectivity is essential for driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and improving access to essential services.”

“The expansion emphasizes our dedication to providing robust and reliable connectivity to communities across Fiji,” said Telecom Fiji CEO Charles Goundar.
