While 4G internet network accessibility has not reached every corner of the world yet it is soon to become a reality on the moon.
The American space agency NASA and Finnish telecommunications company Nokia have collaborated to install a 4G cellular network on the moon.
The objective of this project is to enable long-term human presence on the moon and other celestial bodies making it possible for humans to stay connected even in remote locations. Elon Musk’s company SpaceX is set to launch a rocket carrying a simple 4G network to the moon sometime next year.
As part of this mission, the lander will deploy the 4G network at the lunar South Pole after which it will be controlled from Earth.
Walt Engelund, Deputy Associate Administrator of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate explained that the first challenge is to develop a lightweight, low-power and durable 4G network that can be installed without human intervention and continue to function on the moon.
It is worth noting that this 4G network unit is being developed in the laboratory of the Finnish company which will be resistant to extreme temperatures, radiation and the lunar environment utilizing multiple commercial technologies.
