UAE looks at Kenya for AI and digital infrastructure

To bridge the digital divide in Africa and fast pace the technological innovation in the region, the UAE is looking at investments across artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure in Kenya.

Both UAE and Kenya have signed an investment memorandum focussed on advancing the two initiatives in the region. This can include the development of data centre projects with a total capacity of over 1000 megawatts. In AI, there is focus on assessing the development of large language models (LLMs).

The memorandum was signed by Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Minister of Investment of the UAE, and Eliud Owalo, Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy in Kenya. The aim is to build a nexus between both private and public sector companies in the regions.

The memorandum is focussed towards accelerating the development of a sector that can be a potential growth driver. Reports suggest Kenya’s ICT sector has expanded by 23 per cent annually during the last decade.

Reports also suggest G42, Abu Dhabi’s AI giant will expand into Africa this year.
