Omantel officially launched Maqroo, the world’s first Arabic dyslexic-friendly font, in an exclusive event held at The Chedi Muscat. The launch was attended by Her Excellency Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed bin Nasser Al Shibaniyah, Minister of Education, along with prominent officials, educators, and industry experts.
As part of its commitment to leveraging technology for social benefit, Omantel is collaborating with the Ministry of Education to explore ways to integrate Maqroo into the education sector, an initiative that aims to enhance accessibility and inclusivity for both students and educators.
Commenting on the launch, Talal Al Mamari, Chief Executive Officer at Omantel, said: “At Omantel, we recognise the transformative potential of innovation .Maqroo is more than just a font—it serves as an empowering tool , offering a more inclusive reading experience for individuals with dyslexia. By making it publicly accessible and collaborating with the Ministry of Education, we are ensuring that this initiative reaches students and educators nationwide, thus broadening its impact and promoting inclusivity within the educational system.”
Maqroo was developed after an extensive study of 650 Arabic fonts researched on people with dyslexia. One in every nine people in the Arab world has dyslexia, highlighting the importance of developing specialized educational and technological tools to enhance the ability to learn and actively participate in society. The goal was to optimize readability while preserving the aesthetic integrity of the Arabic script. By improving letter differentiation and spacing, the font assists dyslexic individuals in reading with greater ease and confidence.
As an open-source font, Maqroo is globally available to educational institutions, designers, and organizations looking to adopt more inclusive communication tools. Omantel continues to explore partnerships to integrate Maqroo into digital platforms, educational resources, and public communication materials, ensuring that its impact extends beyond the classroom and into wider society.
The initiative has already received international recognition, earning accolades at the Effie Awards and Dubai Lynx, further cementing Oman’s position as a leader in technology-driven inclusivity. With Maqroo, Omantel reaffirms its role as a pioneer in digital accessibility, shaping a future where communication and education are truly inclusive for all.
