America Movil set to install 4.5G in Mexico

America Movil (AM), the telecoms company controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, is aiming to roll out a 4.5G LTE network in Mexico by the end of this year. Reuters quotes the company’s CEO Daniel Hajj as saying that the move will pave the way for the deployment of a 5G network by 2020 to meet rising demand for mobile data services and to support an increasing number of connected devices. ‘It’s basically thanks to all the investments that we have been doing to modernise the network over the last three years,’ Hajj said, although the executive declined to provide specific investment figures for the new planned high speed networks.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that AM provides mobile services in Mexico via its wholly-owned subsidiary Telcel, which had 72.9 million customers at the end of 2016, giving it a market leading share of 65.4%.
