Telefonica Peru reported over half of data traffic stemmed from fibre optic cables and is now aiming to have over three-quarters of traffic on fibre by the end of 2024.
In a statement, Telefonca Peru said the increase was attributed to the migration of clients/subscribers to new fibre optic services. As a result, around three million Movistar households were transferred to super-fast speeds nationwide.
The operator, which uses the Movistar brand in Peru, reported a 16% increase in year-on-year traffic due to subscribers' use of Facebook video (29%), TikTok (22%), YouTube (11%) and WhatsApp (7%).
Data traffic from fibre optics grew from 26% in 2022 (end of December) to 55% in 2023.
Telefonica Peru director of technology Christian Livia said: “The increase in traffic through fibre optics is a reflection of Movistar's efforts to spread this technology that offers a substantial improvement in the quality of connectivity that our customers can access. This is added to the efforts to expand access, meaning that more people can hire or migrate to this technology, which offers speeds up to 20 times higher than the average.”
Livia added: “We plan to continue promoting fibre, with which we aim that by the end of this year 75% of the traffic of our fixed networks will be through fibre optics.”
During 2023, data traffic on the Movistar mobile network increased by 16% year-on-year in 2023. 4G represents 93% of data carried on the Telefonica unit’s network, with “significant increase” observed in Lima (20%), Arequipa, La Libertad, and Cusco (17%), Junín (16%), Piura and Lambayeque (12%).
