Liberty Latin America trials 5G network in Costa Rica

Liberty Latin America (LLA) has held 5G trials in Costa Rica. It's part of the telco's plans to launch its commercial 5G network later this year.

LLA said that 5G is available in two locations, Universidad Latina de Costa Rica (Latin University of Costa Rica) and the Ultrapark Dos commercial workspace campus, as part of the tests.

LLA is operating 100MHz of 3.5GHz spectrum for its 5G network.

The operator noted that a further 17 locations are due to get 5G once they're given the go-ahead, while the telco plans to switch on 34 5G sites across the country's capital, San Jose.

“Over the next few weeks we will announce actions so that customers can test this network, as phone manufacturers enable their models for 5G in the country," said LLA general manager Johanna Escobar.

Costa Rica's 5G rollout has been delayed due to problems with telecoms regulator Sutel.

The regulator is still yet to hold the planned 5G spectrum auction due to spectrum return issues.

Another Costa Rican telco, Grupo ICE held its own 5G trials last year.

The state-owned company carried out proof of concept (PoC) testing in partnership with the University of Costa Rica at the latter’s Ciudad Universitaria Rodrigo Facio campus, where it claimed it was able to reach speeds greater than 1Gbps.
