Morocco’s Inwi joins Medusa cable project

Morocco-based telecommunication operator Inwi has announced the signing of a strategic partnership agreement with the Medusa submarine cable system to reinforce its trans-Mediterranean connectivity.

This agreement focuses on the supply and operation of dedicated fibre optic links in the new Medusa cable, the longest in the Mediterranean region. Medusa spans from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, establishing a new link from Asia to the Atlantic.

Connecting Morocco to Southern Europe, bridging Nador and Marseille, the cable aims to address the ongoing growth in fixed and internet traffic and provide diverse and secure connectivity paths for Inwi’s individual and professional customers.

Inwi and Medusa says this partnership underscores Inwi’s ongoing commitment to provide innovative and secure solutions to meet the diverse needs of its customers, while contributing to the development of the Moroccan digital ecosystem. Inwi will also play a role in positioning Morocco as a major technological hub in Africa.

Medusa aims to interconnect six South European countries – Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Cyprus – with five North African countries – Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.

It is expected to be ready in 2025 for the service connecting Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Morocco and Algeria. In 2026 it will connect Tunisia, Greece, Libya, Cyprus and Egypt.

According to Orange, one of the participants in the project, once it is complete, Medusa will span an impressive distance of over 8,700 kilometres, making it the longest cable in the Mediterranean Sea.
