Bangladesh has secured the 101st position out of 146 countries despite making progress in its ranking in terms of mobile internet speed performance on the global stage, according to the Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index for December.
In the previous report, the country held the 105th position among 145 nations.
As per the latest report, the median download speed in Bangladesh stood at 23.87Mbps, which was 23Mbps in the previous report published in November.
The top position in the ranking was claimed by the United Arab Emirates, with a median download speed of 303.21Mbps, which was 324.92Mbps in the previous report.
As per the December report, neighbouring India achieved the 22nd position globally, with a median download speed of 91.81Mbps.
This marks a downgrade from its previous position at 18th, where the median download speed was 94.62Mbps.
Among other South Asian countries, the Maldives secured the 30th position, Myanmar 115th, Sri Lanka 117th, Pakistan 126th, Nepal 128th and Afghanistan 143rd in terms of mobile internet speed.
Among the five mobile network providers in Bangladesh, Banglalink emerged as the fastest, according to Ookla’s report.
When measuring the consistency of each operator’s performance, Banglalink’s 89 per cent of results indicated at least a 5Mbps minimum download speed and 1Mbps minimum upload speed.
The Ookla report indicated improvements in internet speed for Banglalink, Grameenphone, Airtel, Robi and state-owned Teletalk compared with that in the previous report.
During the fourth quarter of 2023, Banglalink achieved a median download speed of 26.74Mbps, followed by Robi with 24.62Mbps and Airtel with 23.18Mbps.
Grameenphone and Teletalk took the last two positions, with a median download speed of 21.78Mbps and 6.05Mbps respectively in the same period.
In November 2016, Robi Axiata and Airtel merged.
However, in terms of fixed broadband performance on the global stage, Bangladesh maintained its same position as before, holding steady at 108th with no change.
The median fixed broadband download speed for December was reported at 40.36Mbps, an increase from the previous report’s median fixed broadband download speed of 39.83Mbps.
The Speedtest Global Index by Ookla compares internet speed statistics from across the globe and derives its data from monthly tests conducted by actual users using Speedtest.
