The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) displayed its Space Radio Monitoring Station (SRMS) at the recently held Middle East Space Conference in Muscat.
Considered to be the first to be managed by a telecom regulatory body in the Middle East, the station was ranked ninth in the world according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The station is sued for controlling the use of spectrum and space resources, monitoring and measuring satellite service signals received in the Sultanate of Oman, as well as detecting any unauthorised uses.
According to an official at TRA, "Resolving interferences in satellite services and identifying their source is one of the main objectives of this project. Satellite services coverage often spills over national borders and the source of such interference can be from anywhere in the world, not just from within Oman."
The station has all the technical systems and capabilities for conducting such measurements to verify unlawful uses or resolve interference in space services
The station, situated in Ansab near Muscat Expressing opposite the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, was handed over to TRA in 2017. The station also ensures the use of frequency spectrum and space resources by verifying that existing uses are compatible with the licences granted. It monitors and measures space services signals received in the Sultanate.
