Airtel Business, the B2B division of Bharti Airtel, has secured a contract to deliver real-time connectivity and smart Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for 20 million AESL smart meters across India.
With its extensive communications network in the country, Airtel will provide the necessary connectivity to ensure AESL’s smart meters function efficiently and securely.
The smart meters are being configured to improve communication for the company.
The initiative aims to modernise energy metering by utilising Airtel’s advanced connectivity solutions including narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT), 4G and 2G technologies.
These technologies can facilitate real-time data transfer and communication between smart meters and centralised applications.
Airtel’s IoT platform, the Airtel IoT Hub, will be integral to the project, offering tracking, monitoring, analytics and diagnostic services.
These features will provide AESL with real-time insights and the ability to monitor energy consumption more effectively, giving consumers greater control over their energy use.
The deployment of these smart meters is part of a broader effort to optimise energy usage and management for consumers.
The Indian states of Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand have placed orders with AESL for 20 million smart meters to track and monitor area-wise electricity consumption.
Airtel business India CEO Ganesh Lakshminarayanan stated: “India’s smart metering programme is one of the most significant policy reform measures undertaken by the government. These meters are critical building blocks for smart grids and fundamental enablers for the digitalisation of the power sector.
“Airtel expects its NB-IoT technology to play a significant role in the utilities space to connect and manage smart meters at scale with enhanced coverage, high reliability and security.”
Adani Energy Solutions CEO Kandarp Patel stated: “India’s ambitious revamped distribution sector scheme is transforming the way we deliver power, and AESL is proud to be at the forefront of this revolution. Our partnership with Airtel marks a critical step towards realising the vision of a smarter, more efficient grid for all.
“This powerful combination will enable us to seamlessly deploy our current order book of over 20 million smart meters across India, empowering millions of consumers with real-time consumption data and control, while simultaneously driving down inefficiencies in the distribution network”.
