Baktelecom deploys GPON network in Baku’s Garadagh district

Azerbaijan state-owned operator Baku Telephone Communications (Baktelecom) has rolled out a GPON fibre-optic network covering 60,000 households in the Garadagh district of Baku as part of the ‘Online Azerbaijan’ project. The company claims 24,400 subscribers in the area have already signed up to the service offering access to fixed broadband download speeds of between 30Mbps and 250Mbps as well as fixed voice telephony and television packages.

Within the framework of the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport’s (MDDT’s) Online Azerbaijan project, approximately 888,000 households across the country gained access to high speed broadband services during the first eleven months of 2023. According to the government’s latest figures, broadband networks covered 58% of existing households (1.7 million homes) in the country as of November 2023, with this figure expected to reach 60% by year-end. Implemented under a public-private partnership model, the programme aims to extend GPON-based fixed broadband networks, providing a minimum download speed of 25Mbps, to most areas of the country by the end of 2024.
