Selangor on track for 100% 5G coverage by 2025

The Malaysian state of Selangor is working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to achieve 100% 5G network coverage by 2025, according to a state government official.

According to media reports, state executive councillor for innovation Dr Fahmi Ngah told the Selangor State Legislative Assembly this week that Selangor is close to achieving its goal of 96.3% 5G coverage by 2023. 5G coverage in the state currently stands at 94.3%, compared to 99.87% for 4G coverage.

Most of that 5G coverage, which is being rolled out exclusively by wholesale 5G operator Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), is in urban areas. Fahmi said that 5G coverage in rural districts like Hulu Selangor and Sabak Bernam is less than 80%.

“Selangor will work closely with MCMC to guarantee 5G network coverage at 100% by 2025. This is in line with the Selangor government’s aim of becoming a smart state,” Fahmi said at a press conference, according to the Selangor Journal.

Fahmi also said that 4G network data speeds in Selangor will be upgraded from the current 47 Mbps to 100 Mbps on average by 2025.

Meanwhile, Fahmi also revealed that the MCMC will set up 35 new Digital Economy Centres in all state constituencies in Selangor starting in the second quarter of next year, according to the Bernama news agency.
