DNA confirms next areas for 3G shutdown

Finnish mobile network operator (MNO) DNA has confirmed that its 3G infrastructure will be shut down in the Uusimaa and Southwest Finland regions on 23 November. There will be a few exceptions, however, with services to remain live in the cities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen (all of which are within the Uusimaa region) until January 2024. According to the cellco, meanwhile, the frequencies currently used by its UMTS network will be transferred over for use by its 4G network ‘within a few weeks of the shutdown of 3G’, with the MNO claiming this development will help improve 4G service quality.

DNA has also confirmed the timetable for its future 3G network shutdown plans, noting that the infrastructure will be shuttered in South Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia, Central Finland, Pirkanmaa, Ostrobothnia and Satakunta in January 2024. It notes, meanwhile, that with its 3G network in eastern and northern Finland having been designed, implemented and maintained by Finnish Shared Network – a joint network company established by DNA and Telia Finland – shutdowns across those areas will take place ‘during 2024’.
