BlueSky targets 5G rollout in 2024 to celebrate 25th anniversary

BlueSky American Samoa expects to roll out a 5G network next year, to coincide with its 25th anniversary. In its recent FY22/23 annual report Fijian parent company Amalgamated Telecom Holdings (ATH) noted: ‘BlueSky … continues its journey to celebrate its 25 years of existence in the year 2024. The upcoming financial year is significant for BlueSky with initiatives and programmes directed towards deploying a totally new mobile network across the island territory of American Samoa and thereon bringing 5G services for the people of American Samoa.’

The report also sheds light on the competitive picture in American Samoa, with ATH noting that BlueSky comfortably dominates the mobile market with a 78% market share. The telco generated USD2.55 million in FY22/23 (based on a 15-month timeframe), compared to USD25.76 in the previous twelve-month period. BlueSky’s net profit reached USD1.96 million in FY22/23, which the group says represents its highest bottom line between 2017 and 2023.

TeleGeography notes that BlueSky bid USD47,600 for twelve 5G-suitable 3.5GHz licences in Auction 105, back in 2020. Ericsson was subsequently handed a network upgrade contract in September 2022.
