4iG, Telecom Egypt agree to build Albania-Egypt fiber-optic link

Hungarian IT service management company 4iG said that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with state-owned Telecom Egypt for the construction of a high capacity point-to-point underwater fibre-optic cable linking Egypt to Albania.

"With an open access model and multiple branching units, the system is set up to be a new European cable entry point with a different transit passage compared to the already existing Mediterranean routes to the main internet Point of Presence (PoP) such as the ones in Frankfurt in addition to numerous potential PoPs in Eastern Europe," 4iG said in a press release.

4iG, which indirectly owns one of the two mobile networks operators in Albania, said it sees Albania as a strategic gateway to Eastern Europe, supported by secure cross-border terrestrial infrastructure.

The MoU aligns with 4iG plans to enter the market of intercontinental data transmission infrastructure between Europe and Asia, and Europe and East Africa, the Hungarian company said.

Last year, 4iG completed the indirect acquisition of 99.9% of the country’s then fastest growing operator One Telecommunications and 80.27% of the country’s largest telecom network operator, Albtelecom, to merge them into a sole entity under the One Albania brand.
