Egyptian mobile operators provide free calls to & from quake-hit Morocco

Three major mobile network operators in Egypt announced providing free calls and text messages to and from Morocco to allow their customers to get in touch with family and friends in the quake-hit Morocco.

Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, and Etisalat Misr made the announcement in three separate statements.

Vodafone said its offer is effective from 10 September and over the next three days. Likewise, Orange's initiative will commence on Monday and extend for three days.

Etisalat offered its customers in Morocco free calls to Egypt for one week.

The 6.8 magnitude earthquake, which struck late on Friday and was followed by a 4.9 aftershock, killed more than 1,300 people and left around 800 others in critical condition.

No casualties have been reported yet among Egyptian expats in Morocco, according to a statement released by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Saturday.

The quake hit the High Atlas Mountains, southwest of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km, causing widespread damage.

Rescue operations in search of survivors are still ongoing.
