Maxis trials 6GHz spectrum

Malaysian operator Maxis conducted a trial of 6GHz spectrum with Universiti Malaysia (UM), as the operator looks to improve network traffic and explore use cases such as cloud computing, VR and AR.

In a statement, the operator detailed that its field trial found peek speeds of 1.28Gbps with an 80MHz bandwidth using a prototype 6GHz Active Antenna Unit and a prototype mobile device.

Indoor penetration was “good” and showed the ability to reach speeds over 300Mbps at locations 400 metres away for cell sites. It also showed potential for improving mobile signal propagation with more advanced antennas.

The operator concluded that it found tapping into 6GHz spectrum and new antenna technology will play a significant role in bringing 5G-advanced into commercial use.

Malaysia is the highest consumer of data in Southeast Asia and among the highest globally, claimed Maxis. Customers use on average 30GB each per month, driven by video streaming, social media and instant messaging, combining a total volume of 180,000TB.

“Our trial is an example of industry and academia working together for the greater good and advancing technology and spectrum knowledge. This will benefit UM students working on research projects in next-generation network technologies,” said Maxis acting chief technology strategy officer Tan Cheng Peng.
