Deutsche Telekom expands high-speed connections for 5G mobile sites

German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom has made significant progress in connecting its 5G mobile communications locations nationwide with high-speed fiber optic connections. Currently, 83% of all 5G sites in Germany are already connected with fiber optics, enabling faster and more reliable connectivity.

Deutsche Telekom has equipped over 10,000 5G mobile sites with fiber optic connections at a speed of 10 Gbps, which accounts for approximately 40% of all 5G radio systems. The company plans to further expand its networkequipping more than 28,000 cell phone sites with high-speed connections2026.

The increasing data demands and the rapid pace of 5G technology have prompted Deutsche Telekom to focus on improving capacity and speed in its transport network. Abdu Mudesir, head of technology at Telekom Deutschland, emphasized the need for continued network expansion to meet the growing mobile data traffic, which is increasingaround 30% annually.

The 3.6 GHz frequency band is particularly significant for Deutsche Telekom as it ensures powerful and efficient connectivity. The antennas operating on this frequency are connected to the transport network via a 10 Gbps fiber optic connection. This frequency band complements the existing 5G frequencies in the 700 MHz and 2.1 GHz range, resulting in enhanced download speeds and reliable mobile phone coverage, especially in densely populated areas.

Deutsche Telekom has already made its 5G network accessible to 95% of households in Germany, with LTE coverage reaching 99% of households. The company has also introduced the use of the 700 MHz range to improve mobile communications coverage in rural areas.

As 5G Standalone (SA) becomes technically available in the 2.1 GHz frequency band, Deutsche Telekom plans to commence its commercial use for residential customers once suitable applications are developed.

Deutsche Telekom initiated the rollout of its 5G network in select cities across Germany in July 2019, and through continued expansion efforts, aims to provide widespread access to high-speed and reliable connectivity for its customers.
