Telefonica Moviles El Salvador, which provides services under the Movistar brand name, has so far invested USD120 million in the modernisation and upgrade of its mobile network to prepare for the launch of 5G services.
El Mundo cites the operator’s Director of Corporate Affairs and Wholesale Business, Eduardo Solorzano Martinez, as saying that the investment is the first phase of a plan to spend a total of USD280 million to improve services and expand coverage in El Salvador.
As part of this phase, the departments of Santa Ana, San Miguel and San Salvador have been covered by the 5G-ready network, with this set to increase to 100% of customers next year. The second phase will see USD50 million spent on upgrading 3G mobile sites to 4G technology, particularly in low capacity areas in the east, west and north of the country.
