Alaskan telecoms operator GCI has extended its 5G coverage to Unalaska, which is positioned near the tail end of the Aleutian Chain and ranks as one of the most remote communities in the US. GCI says it has invested approximately USD4.9 million in its Unalaska 5G deployment to date. The 5G rollout complements the AU-Aleutians Fiber Project, which aims to connect a dozen Aleutian, Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island communities with fibre by end-2024.
TeleGeography notes that GCI was the first US cellco to launch 5G services in Alaska when it switched on its network in Anchorage in April 2020. 5G connectivity was subsequently extended to Fairbanks, Palmer, Wasilla, Juneau, Eagle River and Girdwood.
