June sets new record for mobile, internet users in Bangladesh

The country's mobile and internet subscribers set a new record in June, reaching the highest-ever numbers of 186.10 million and 129.40 million, respectively, according to the telecom regulator.

The number of mobile SIM users increased by 0.97 million in June compared to May this year, according to data from the Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

The number was 185.13 million at the end of May.

Out of the total 186.10 million subscribers in June, 81.45 million were Grameenphone users, 56.35 million were Robi users, 41.81 million were Banglalink users, and 6.49 million were Teletalk users.

In May this year, the numbers were 81.24 million for Grameenphone, 55.92 million for Robi, 41.42 million for Banglalink, and 6.54 million for Teletalk.

Only the state-owned Teletalk lost a few thousand subscribers in June, show BTRC data.

In June, mobile internet subscribers saw significant growth, jumping from 127.62 million to 129.40 million, adding 1.78 million new subscribers in the month.

Internet service providers (ISPs) and PSTN operators added nearly 10,000 new internet subscribers in the month.

ISP and PSTN internet subscriber information is being updated quarterly due to the high number of ISP operators and the very low monthly churn of fixed internet subscriptions.

A mobile SIM subscriber means biometrically verified people who have availed of voice, data, SMS or other services at least once in the preceding 90 days, according to the BTRC.
